Nhandu chromatus, trio for bassoon, oboe, and piano, 2007: I composed Nhandu chromatus in 2007 for Mike Parker-Harley, Jackie Leclair, and John Orfe. They premiered the piece at the international double reed conference. The piece is rhapsodic, free-flowing, and very difficult. I tried to create something exciting for my three friends, all of whom are first-rate virtuosos. The title is the scientific name of a species of tarantula, typically found in Brazil. Like the spider, this music is fast, unpredictable, and by turns languid and still. It is also chromatic. |
